On average, Yorkshire Terriers cost around $800, and that price is typically for a Yorkie that’s not a show dog. That makes it a real treat to find free Yorkies. But just like with anything else, you get what you pay for. And for some very sound reasons, you won’t find a breeder who’s willing to just give an AKC standard Yorkie away — but that’s not necessarily a ‘bad’ thing.
Why Free Yorkies Exist
There are too, some very sound reasons why you __can__ find free Yorkies. In many cases, free Yorkie puppies are those that don’t meet the AKC standard. These are dogs that may be mis-colored, mid-sized, or even misbehaved. Perhaps there’s something in the genealogy of free Yorkshire terriers that disqualifies them as AKC standards. Or maybe there’s something about the dogs’ health conditions that exclude them. The AKC is rather strict when it comes to defining a dog as a Yorkie, and only the purest and healthiest qualify. Such high standards may undervalue a Yorkie so much that they’re given away for free.
Where To Find Free Yorkies
You may also find free Yorkies for adoption. Okay — maybe not **entirely** free. The small donation that most adoption centers ask for might qualify these dogs as cheap Yorkies rather than free Yorkies.
Another source for free Yorkshire terriers is non-breeders. Non-breeders are folks who happen to have an available litter of puppies. Their interest lays in finding good homes for the pups — not money. Of course, you may also find a couple of free Yorkshire terriers that are available from someone who has to move into a no-pet community. The possibilities are as unique as the situations that create them. And if you’re bound and determined to get free Yorkies, these alternatives are viable places to look.
Free Comes With a Price
Just be aware of what you’re getting into. Like we said, you get what you pay for. Pricey pups usually accompany an extensive trail of paperwork that verifies their lineage, health, and temperament. They’re also AKC standard. If you’re comfortable with getting a non-AKC standard Yorkie (which in all probability, is what you’ll get from pursuing free Yorkie puppies), then you should have no problem finding a warm-hearted companion that lacks a pedigree.
