When compared to the expert care of reputable breeders, pet stores fail to meet even the most common sense standards. Many pet stores are so below standard, in fact, you’re almost guaranteed to experience problems should you decided to buy from them. That’s why we recommend buying Yorkshire terrier puppies for sale from breeders – not pet stores. Yorkie puppies for sale from the pet store are sold for the money — not for the people that’s they’re sold to — and not even for the pups themselves.
Pet Store Yorkies Might Not Be Purebreds
There isn’t a solid guarantee that the Yorkie puppies for sale are purebreds for example — all because pet shops don’t keep adequate records on a litter’s dam and sire. If there **are** records, little thought is given to the characteristics, health, and/or temperament of that litter’s dam and sire. Pet shops treat at Yorkies as opportunities to make a quick buck and they fail to appreciate how characteristics, health, and/or temperament can increase or decrease the real value of a Yorkie.
This doesn’t mean to suggest that all pet shops neglect the special needs of the Yorkie. Some pet shops are as reputable as the next best breeder. The reality, however, paints a rather disheartening picture. The places from where most pet shops get their inventory is a tell all.
Pet Store Yorkies Have Questionable Suppliers
For example, pet shops will resell litters raised in puppy mills or from non-professional breeders. Yorkshire terrier puppies for sale that are raised in mills aren’t properly socialized, and Yorkies raised by non-professional breeders aren’t always properly cared for. All the problems associated with a lack of proper socialization and care are unfortunately passed on to the unknowing pet store customer. (For more details, read our article about the problems with teacup Yorkies that come from a puppy mill.)
Additional Problems Accompany Pet Store Yorkies
To make matters worse, pet stores additionally pass on incorrect information about the puppies that they sell! They’ll tell you for example, that your puppy needs a bunch of supplementary accessories — many of which are completely unnecessary. Pet stores simply want you to spend more money when they do this. They may also tell you that all of their puppies are properly tempered when they’re actually depressed or anxious.
Buy Your Yorkie From A Reputable Breeder Instead
When it comes to buying Yorkie puppies, it just doesn’t pay to buy them from pet shops. It’s too much of a risk and although your intentions may be well-meaning, the problems that you experience could overwhelm you and affect the interaction between you and your pet.
