If you purchased your poodle from a professional breeder, you probably received a registration form. This form is what verifies new best friends as purebred AKC Poodles. The following text will walk you through the steps of registering your poodle with the AKC (American Kennel Club) — one of the largest dog registration organizations in the world.
Step One: Determine what class your registration belongs to.
When you bought your poodle from your breeder, your contract should have specified the type of registration you’re allowed to apply for. If for example, your poodle exhibits characteristics that don’t conform to AKC standards, your contract should have specified that you apply for a limited registration. This type of registration doesn’t allow nonconforming characteristics to pass from one dog to another, and its usually reinforced with an agreement or promise to spay or neuter the dog.
The other type of registration — full registration — is restriction free. It essentially accompanies a poodle fully conforms to AKC standards and states that breeding is acceptable. Should an owner breed a poodle with a limited registration, its offspring cannot be registered at all.
Step Two: Register the dog immediately.
Don’t wait longer than necessary to register your poodle. There could be financial consequences. You don’t *have* to register your dog, but the registration is handy to have in the event you decide to enter it into a few competitions, or in the event that someone questions the purity of your dog. After one year, registration costs increase with a “late” fee.
Step Three: Fill out an application from the AKC website.
Go to http://www.akc.org and download the ILP (Indefinite Listing Privilege) application. Fill it out and return it with two photos of your poodle, an accompanying veterinarian report, and a non-refundable fee. One photo should display your poodle’s profile in a standing position, and the other should display the dog’s head — face front. The vet report should verify that the poodle has been spayed or neutered (if you’re applying for a limited registration). You can also request an application via email through ILP@akc.org. But If you prefer to initiate the registration process offline, give the AKC a call via 919-233-9767.
Registering AKC Poodles From Shelters or Rescue Groups
Keep in mind that the AKC will register poodles from shelters or rescue groups via an ILP number. As long as a poodle is a purebred and it has an ILP number, it can compete in AKC events.
